It's kind of supposed to be dark. One, it's a blackout. Two, this is my perspective of the scene in Iron Man, #1. After destroying the enemies hurting the townsfolk. This is after he blows up the tank, so again, it's supposed to have a dark feel. It doesn't appear to be deep, but the black is representing him alone, you know, he walks alone. It represents the blackness after three months of being tortured, and the death of Yinsen, and the knowledge that things will never go back to normal. It's his feelings for Pepper, and Rhodes, and everyone he cares about.
Also, the black mixed with red and gold, and the light from the arc reactor looks really cool.
